In July 2012, I went to Zambia. This was my first trip to Africa and I instantly fell in love with the continent. This trip was certainly an experience filled with close encounters and nail-biting experiences with the local wildlife. I nearly get eaten by a hippo 3 times. I also get followed by a pride of lions! I know - crazy. I recommend this trip if you would love to get to know some hippos and maybe fancy bumping into them in the night.

My First Taste of Africa

In July 2012, I visited Zambia on an organised trip using a company called 'Exodus'. The trip was for 10 days and would involve wild camping in the bush as well as canoeing down the Zambezi river. The Zambezi river is the fourth-longest river in Africa. It is mostly notable for the beautiful Victoria Falls,… Read More

Running into Hippos on the Zambezi

It was the morning after my first night camping in Zambia and we were up at the crack of dawn. We quickly ate breakfast before going down to the river's edge and boarding our canoes. Before long, we set off, disturbing the pristine surface with gentle ripples. There was a loud bellow, almost like a… Read More

Chased by a Hippo Whilst Wild Camping

We setup camp on the remote island in the middle of the Zambezi river. As I ate my dinner, the gruff laugh of hippos became an endless background noise. I watched them as I ate. There must have been over ten hippos relaxing in the river near camp, bellowing to each other. Unfortunately, my DSLR… Read More

Day 2 on the Zambezi

The day after my hairy encounter with the hippo in the night (read about that scary experience here), we set out for another full day canoeing down the Zambezi. I'm not sure why - maybe I'm just incompetent - but it always seemed to be our canoe that got into trouble. We'd already nearly got… Read More

Last Day on the River & Our New Camp

It was our third and final day canoeing the Zambezi river. As usual, we made an early start. The hours spent canoeing were shorter this time and it only took us half a day to arrive at our new campsite which we were to stay at for 4 nights. On the way to the new… Read More

Followed by Lions Through the Bush

The first part of our adventure was over and now we were safely on dry land, it was time for some land activities. One of these was a bush walk. We had a walk with an armed ranger just in case we bumped into any trouble. Once again, I am forced to despair at my… Read More

Helping Out at an Orphanage

We spent a few days visiting an orphanage in a local village. It was about a 30 minute drive to get there and we had to travel through a vast expanse of bush on a little dirt track. The village was the first sign of human life that we had seen for a while, other… Read More

Last Day in Zambia

It was our last full day in Zambia and we bid farewell to our campsite. We were journeying back to our original campsite (no, not the one where I got chased by a hippo! You can read about that lovely experience here) which we stayed at on our first night in Zambia. It was a… Read More
