1-Week Horse Riding Safari in South Africa
In September 2014, Lewis and I journeyed to South Africa on our first major trip together.
We were staying in a luxurious safari lodge in a private reserve reserve called 'Ant's Nest and Ant's Hill', situated in Vaalwater, three hours north of Johannesburg.
The trip was a week-long horse riding holiday, where you took part in horseback safaris.
Below is a chronological list of all my blog posts from this trip.
After around 24 hours of flying and airport stopovers, followed by a 3 hour minibus journey, we finally arrived in South Africa! We flew from Manchester to Dubai, had some amazing sushi at the airport, and then flew to Johannesburg. I felt dreadful but was so excited to be in South Africa. We were staying… Read More

The next day we were up early. Breakfast was delivered to our lodge which was lovely. After breakfast, I got ready for my first horseback safari. When we arrived at the main lodge, the horses were tacked-up ready. The horses roam free across the reserve and are caught early in the mornings, ready for our… Read More

That afternoon, after my first horseback safari, we decided to go on a game drive. We jumped into the open-backed four-by-four and headed out into the bush. Over the course of the week, I started to fall in love with my horse, Kilimanjaro. He was just so lovely and fun to ride. I also love his colouring. He must have some Appaloosa in his bloodline. I rode him every afternoon for the working week, Friday being my last day with him. If… Read More

On Saturday evening, we were all invited to spend sundowners at Ant's Nest - the other resort in the reserve. It was around an hour's drive through the bush to get there. On the way we saw an array of wildlife including: zebras, impalas, waterbuck and sable antelope. At one point, our vehicle had to… Read More

On our last day, we relaxed in our lodge, chilling by the pool and admiring the views. We left on 8th September, embarking on a long trip home. We had a 7 hour flight to Dubai and then after 2 hour break in Dubai, another 6 hour flight back to England. I only wished that… Read More
