In September 2014, we went to South Africa. We were staying in a luxurious lodge in a reserve called Ant's Nest & Ant's Hill, situated in Vaalwater, three hours north of Johannesburg. The trip was a riding holiday, where you took part in horseback safaris. Being on horseback enables you to get very close to wildlife without starling it. We stayed in Ant's Hill for a week.

Our Lodge in South Africa

After around 24 hours of flying and airport stopovers, followed by a 3 hour minibus journey, we finally arrived in South Africa! We flew from Manchester to Dubai, had some amazing sushi at the airport, and then flew to Johannesburg. I felt dreadful but was so excited to be in South Africa... Read more.

My First Horseback Safari

The next day we were up early. Breakfast was delivered to our lodge which was lovely. After breakfast, I got ready for my first horseback safari. When we arrived at the main lodge, the horses were tacked-up ready. The horses roam free across the reserve and are caught early in the mornings... Read more.

Game Drive

That afternoon, after my first horseback safari, we decided to go on a game drive. We jumped into the open-backed four-by-four and headed out into the bush. It wasn't long until we saw a family of giraffes striding elegantly through the long yellow grass. They stopped to look at us but were mostly relaxed as they... Read more.

Horse Racing Through the Bush

On my second day in South Africa, I woke up feeling a little sick - likely sleep-deprived. Therefore I couldn't take part in the morning ride. I had a nice lie in and casually woke up and ate breakfast and lunch. In the afternoon, I was taking part in a ride. After assessing my riding skills the previous day... Read more.

A Little Adventure

I decided that in the afternoons I would take part in a riding safari but the mornings were time to relax and that's just what I did. On the morning of our third day, we decided to explore a little on foot. We hadn't really walked around our lodge and had only stuck to the path leading up to it. So, we climbed down from our... Kilimanjaro the Horse

Over the course of the week, I started to fall in love with my horse, Kilimanjaro. He was just so lovely and fun to ride. I also love his colouring. He must have some Appaloosa in his bloodline. I rode him every afternoon for the working week, Friday being my last day with him. If only I could have taken him home with me... Read more.

Sundowners with Rhinos

On Saturday evening, we were all invited to spend sundowners at Ant's Nest - the other resort in the reserve. It was around an hour's drive through the bush to get there. On the way we saw an array of wildlife including: zebras, impalas, waterbuck and sable antelope. At one point, our vehicle had to come to a halt... Read more.

Our Last Day

On our last day, we relaxed in our lodge, chilling by the pool and admiring the views. We left on 8th September, embarking on a long trip home. We had a 7 hour flight to Dubai and then after 2 hour break in Dubai, another 6 hour flight back to England. I only wished that I could take Kilimanjaro home with me... Read more.
